Charity Walking Challenge with Bespoke App

Client: Telecommunications Company
Venue: N/A
Location: UK wide

The Objective

To orchestrate an initiative that incentives employees, builds engagement, improves morale and promotes healthy wellbeing all through a bespoke application.

The Solution

We began by taking a deep dive into the company’s overall strategy and their existing internal communications approach. Through several collaborative conversations, we gained a thorough understanding of what truly resonates with their employees, what energises them, what makes them feel connected, and what would inspire them to actively participate in an initiative designed to promote wellbeing, teamwork, and a bit of friendly competition. This foundation helped us shape a programme that wasn’t just enjoyable, but also meaningful and aligned with the company’s broader goals.

Following extensive research into a wide range of wellbeing and engagement products, we identified a solution that offered both accessibility and impact: a bespoke “team walking challenge” delivered through an online app tailored specifically to the brief. The platform was intentionally simple to use, ensuring zero barriers to entry, yet powerful enough to allow every participant to track their steps, monitor their individual progress, and see how their team was performing in comparison to others. This visibility played a major role in maintaining motivation and encouraging regular participation.

To elevate the experience even further, we developed a fully customised walking route that tied directly into the client’s strategy, reinforcing key messages throughout the challenge. Alongside this, we built a comprehensive bi weekly communications plan designed to keep the momentum high, supported by a fresh and engaging creative theme that tied the entire programme together. As an added morale boosting touch, each participant received “Monday Motivational Treats” delivered straight to their home or workplace, small yet thoughtful surprises that helped kick start their week and maintain enthusiasm across the four week incentive.

A total of 70 employees took part, organised into seven teams of 10, creating a perfect balance of manageable group sizes and healthy inter team rivalry. Throughout the event, our team remained fully available to provide technical support, troubleshoot any app related questions, and assist with administrative requirements to keep the challenge running smoothly and efficiently.

To say the teams “hit the ground running” or walking, more accurately would be an understatement. Within the very first week, participants collectively achieved an extraordinary total of nearly 2.5 million steps. Yes, you read that correctly: 2.5 million steps in just seven days. This level of commitment not only exceeded expectations but also set a fantastic tone for the remainder of the challenge.

To further strengthen collaboration and keep the experience fresh, we introduced additional themed competitions each week. The first week’s photo competition became an instant favourite. Participants shared snapshots from their walks, ranging from scenic landscapes to quirky discoveries and creative compositions. These images didn’t just highlight the unique perspectives of each individual, they also acted as inspiration for others, adding another layer of connection and motivation across the teams.
